Family health in winter: keeping your household well on the Costa del Sol

Winter here is mild, but it still brings coughs, colds and flu to every family I see. Here's how I help my own patients stay well through the cooler months.

People are often surprised when I tell them that winter is one of my busiest seasons as a family doctor on the Costa del Sol. Yes, our winters are gentle compared with northern Europe — but that is exactly why so many families are caught off guard. The viruses don't take a holiday, and neither do the bugs children bring home from school.

Why families still get ill in a mild winter

Homes here are built for summer heat, not winter cold. Tiled floors, high ceilings and limited heating mean indoor temperatures can drop lower than people expect, especially at night. Add damp air, crowded classrooms and visitors arriving with colds from colder climates, and you have the perfect recipe for a winter of sniffles.

Simple habits that genuinely help

  • Keep the flu vaccine in mind — it is recommended every autumn, especially for children, grandparents and anyone with a long-term condition.
  • Ventilate your home daily, even when it feels chilly. Ten minutes of fresh air makes a real difference to indoor germs and damp.
  • Dress in layers rather than one heavy jumper — children heat up and cool down quickly between school, the playground and home.
  • Prioritise sleep and regular meals; tired, hungry children pick up everything going around.
  • Keep washing hands. It sounds basic because it is — and it works.

Don't forget vitamin D

Even on the Costa del Sol, shorter days and more time indoors mean many families' vitamin D levels dip in winter. If you or your children are feeling constantly tired, achy or low, it is worth a simple blood test rather than guessing with supplements.

When to call the doctor

Most winter illnesses pass with rest, fluids and patience. But do seek medical advice if your child has a fever that won't settle, is struggling to breathe, is drinking much less than usual, or simply isn't themselves for more than a couple of days. Trust your instincts — parents almost always know when something isn't right.

Winter on the Costa del Sol can be a lovely, quiet season for families. A little preparation means you spend it making memories, not sitting in waiting rooms.
